The Gulf Coast region's almost 14,000 square mile area is home to approximately 6.1 million people. The region has a population that represents twenty-four percent of the population of the entire state of Texas. Sixty-seven percent of the population resides in Harris County, the most populous county in Texas, the third most populous county in the nation, and home of the City of Houston.

 
Quick Statistics
  • Total regional population grew 20.3% from 2000 to 2010, more than double the nation’s 9.7 percent growth rate for the same time period.  
  • The population is becoming less Anglo with the percent of Hispanic or Latino population rising rapidly from 28.6% in 2000 to 35.2% in 2010.   
  • The City of Houston is the state’s largest city with a population of 2.1 million.
  • The largest population increases have occurred in the areas immediately adjacent to Harris County: Fort Bend, Montgomery and northern Brazoria counties.  
  • Fort Bend County grew 65.2% from 2000 to 2010 making it the third fastest growing county in the state.
