The Greater Houston Partnership's Initiative to Fill Middle-Skills Jobs

The Greater Houston Partnership's UpSkill Houston initiative is the nation's first business-led, community-wide, integrated workforce effort. The initiative focuses on closing the skills gap in Houston by increasing the number of Houstonians trained for great careers across the region. The Partnership forecasts nearly 75,000 annual jobs openings in these "middle skills" careers that require more than a high school education but less than a four-year college degree. Most community colleges offer training for middle-skill jobs.

UpSkill Houston identified 53 occupations that are critical to Houston's economy. See the full list below. Many of the occupations will require work experience. If you are interested in exploring current job openings, visit WorkInTexas.com

The tips below will help you search for relevant job openings in the Houston area.


Visit WorkInTexas.com

  • Select "Search All Jobs"
  • Under the "Browse Jobs" tab, select "By Occupation and Location"
  • In the field for "Job Title," enter your desired occupation from the list provided below
  • Skip the fields "Occupational Category" and "Occupation"
  • Skip the fields "ZIP Code" and "Plus"
  • In the field for "Region," use the drop-down arrow to select "Houston/Galveston Region"
  • Hit the "Search" button
  • Click on the job title to view the description. Some jobs may include a link to apply online at the company's website while others may require registration and an application through Work-In-Texas.
