Skills For Veterans dedicates $1 million from the Skills Development Fund to address the training needs of post-9/11 veterans returning home and entering the Texas workforce. Skills for Veterans will enhance the skills of veterans, which will benefit Texas employers. Employers who hire post-9/11 era veterans, especially those who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation New Dawn or Operation Enduring Freedom, may be eligible to participate in this training opportunity.

Employment Resources
For Veterans
|
"A Veteran is a fellow citizen, a man or woman who at one significant point in his or her life, made out a blank check payable to the United States of America for any amount up to and including life itself..." - Thomas P. Pallandino, Executive Director of the Texas Veterans Commission.
Veterans are critical to the Texas workforce and often face numerous challenges when looking for employment as they transition or retire from military service. Concerns, misconceptions, and lack of knowledge about existing support can translate into a lack of employment opportunities for veterans.
The Texas Veterans Portal is a one stop shop for our veteran customers. Whether they are looking for assistance with transitioning to civilian life, finding a job, or receiving job training, the Texas Veterans Portal has been designed to help them navigate their way through civilian life.
Make sure your veteran customer knows the resources available to them through the Texas Veterans Portal or Mobile App today!

PROVEN LEADERSHIP: Veterans were put into leadership roles at early stages of their time in the service. Battle proven leadership developed in the military is well beyond that of a similar person in a civilian job.
TEAM PLAYERS: From the early stages of initial training, all members of the military have learned to work in a team environment. Some teams are small, others are huge, but all members of the team know that their efforts are to support the team in reaching the larger objective.
WORK ETHIC: The work ethic of veterans is unparalleled due to the need to depend on each other for their lives. Every military person knows that their life and success depends on their teammates. As a result, the work ethic of veterans is vastly stronger than the average civilian work ethic. People who have served in the military gained experience working long hours in non-traditional environments.
TRAINING AND EDUCATION: Today's military veterans have been training in nearly every occupation imaginable, with a strong emphasis on technology. Most of the training schools of the military that teach technology, leadership, sales, management and operations surpass those available to civilians.
TAX CREDITS: Federal tax benefits may be available to employers that hire veterans under the Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC). Hiring multiple WOTC-qualified employees can result in significant reduction in federal income taxes. Companies can receive up to a $9,600 tax credit by hiring a veteran.

Success Story: Jasmine B
Jasmine spent the last two years as a Security Officer earning $9.25 an hour. Before that, she worked briefly in retail and enjoyed interacting with customers and providing assistance. Her lack of work history was an obstacle to obtaining better employment, so she was convinced that earning $9.25 per hour in the Security field was the best chance for her. Workforce Solutions presented her resume to a Mortgage Services company for a Customer Consultant position where she would be able to use her people skills and start a new career. The employer was impressed by her personality and train-ability and hired her as a Customer Support Consultant on June 5, 2017. Jasmine is now earning $12 an hour and is enjoying her new career.
