The Gulf Coast Workforce Board’s mission is to help employers meet their workforce needs and individuals build careers so both can compete in the global economy. To judge how well the Gulf Coast of Texas competes with six similar economic regions in the nation and how it will be able to provide employers now and in the future with a competitive workforce, the Board produced a Workforce Report Card.
The first was in 2005, in which the Houston-Galveston region was compared to Atlanta, Dallas, Denver, Miami, San Antonio and San Diego. Regions were evaluated in terms of industries, jobs, labor alignment, the quality of life, education and the talent pipeline, as well as the overall well-being of the people. Subsequent reports showed what changes occurred in each region, and how each was affected by the economy and other factors.
In its most recent 2011 Report Card, based on 2010 economic data, the Board continues to compare itself with these other U.S. regions using this same criteria, but also measures how the Houston-Galveston region fits into the larger global economy.
