Workforce Solutions - Gulf Coast Workforce Board is the local board of directors for Workforce Solutions, which serves 13 counties in the Houston-Galveston region. In addition to being the largest of 28 local boards in the State of Texas, Workforce Solutions - Gulf Coast Workforce Board plans and oversees the delivery of employment services, education, and training. Its local system is one of the largest in the nation.

Workforce BoardThe board itself is business-led, with a majority of its 63 members representing the private sector. Other board members come from labor and community-based organizations, education, economic development organizations and state agencies. The board sets policy and annually directs expenditures that underwrite services for more than 90,000 businesses and 4.5 million residents in the region.

In 2008, Workforce Solutions, formerly known as The WorkSource, served more than 24% of the 125,000 businesses in the region. It recruited, screened and referred candidates to fill almost 50,000 open jobs, and it provided current economic and labor market data, human resource consulting and outplacement services for 8,400 workers from 73 companies.

Through its region-wide network of local offices, Workforce Solutions served more than 378,000 individuals, helping more than 281,000 people go to work or get a better job, including almost 24,000 welfare recipients; 35,000 veterans; and 11,000 ex-offenders.

Workforce Solutions supported early education and care for a daily average of 30,965 children through financial aid to their parents and guardians, and it spent more than $111 million in financial aid for all of its customers, helping them go to school, buy clothing or tools to go to work, and pay for transportation needs and child care expenses.
