Hurricane Ike inflicted major damage to the MSA in September and will undoubtedly cause many to lose jobs temporarily if not permanently. It will be months before the long-term effects of the storm are known. |

September 2008 employment data was released on October 17, 2008, for the Gulf Coast region.
The Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown MSA added 55,700 jobs in September, for an over-the-year growth rate of 2.2 percent. This was the lowest rate of growth for the month of September since 2004, when the rate was 0.8 percent. Last year at this time, the area added 98,200 jobs, or 4.0 percent over the previous year. Educational & Health Services and Professional & Business Services are the two major industry groups adding the most positions, up 9,100 and 7,400 jobs respectively from September 2007. Construction added 5,700 jobs from September 2007.
The thirteen county region’s unemployment rate was 5.1 percent, up from the 4.3percent rate of September 2007.
