Detailed Information for Health Care and Social Assistance, NAICS 62

From November 2007 to November 2008, 54,300 jobs (2.1%) were added to the region’s economy. Health Care & Social Assistance was one of the sectors adding the most jobs over the year, up 6,900 from November 2007.

Monthly data does not reveal the most detailed information, but it is the timeliest. Nevertheless, sub-sectors can be reviewed in more detail by using employers’ quarterly payroll records to see where changes are occurring in the region. This data is also reported at the 13-county Gulf Coast region level.

There are four sub-sectors within Health Care and Social Assistance: Ambulatory Health Care Services; Hospitals; Nursing and Residential Care Facilities; and Social Assistance.  The two with the largest net gains over the year in the 2nd quarter 2008 were Ambulatory Health Care Services, up 5,302 jobs, and Hospitals, up 4,891 jobs. These two sub-sectors also have the highest average weekly wage (AWW) for the data being reviewed.

Something to note about the higher average weekly wage in Ambulatory Health Care Services ($867) and the number of new jobs (up 5,302) is that some of the job growth is in Home Health Care Services, up 1,507 jobs from June 2007. The average weekly wage for Home Health Care Services was $306 for the 33,781 jobs reported for June 2008.  What raises the wage to $867 for Ambulatory Health Care Services is the 41,336 jobs in the sub-sector Offices of Physicians that pay an average weekly wage of $1,335. One must remember that these are industry wages, not occupational wages. Average weekly wages are attained by using total quarterly payroll for an industry and dividing by the number of jobs and then dividing by 13 (weeks in the quarter). When doctors’ wages are included in the employer’s payroll tax reports the doctors’ wages will increase the weekly wages for the industry.

The AWW for all jobs, based on employers’ payroll records in the Gulf Coast Region for second quarter 2008, was $1,010.
