Meet Glenn Rex: Building a Skilled Workforce Through Partnership

Glenn Rex brings more than three decades of experience in Houston’s mechanical contracting industry to his role on the Gulf Coast Workforce Board. Since 1994, he has served as executive director of the Mechanical Contractors Association of Houston, representing employers in their labor relationships with Plumbers Local 68 and Pipefitters Local Union 211.

For Rex, strong labor-management relationships are an important part of building a skilled workforce. Through union hiring halls and joint apprenticeship programs, employers can connect with qualified workers while supporting training that prepares the next generation of skilled tradespeople.

“We’ve been good bargaining partners, good labor and management partners for all these years. And that relationship is one that we treasure and hold very dear.”

The apprenticeship model is especially important to Rex. The five-year program gives apprentices the opportunity to develop skills in trades such as plumbing, welding, pipe fitting, and HVAC service before entering the workforce as journeymen.

Rex joined the Gulf Coast Workforce Board after being encouraged by leaders from Plumbers Local 68 who were already involved with the board. His experience working with both employers and labor partners gives him a valuable perspective on the workforce needs of the region.

Outside of his professional work, Rex enjoys spending time outdoors. Golf, hunting, fishing, and simply being out on the land are among his favorite ways to spend his free time.

“I enjoy being outdoors. I like golf. I like hunting and fishing. I like to be out on the land enjoying the great outdoors.”

Through his work with employers, labor partners, and apprenticeship programs, Glenn Rex brings a firsthand understanding of what it takes to prepare skilled workers for Houston’s complex and evolving industries.
